FASTMAIL HELP!
FASTMAIL is a DOOR that allows you to collect your mail in
one mailbag for speed and convenience. A description of each
of the menu options follows.
0 - Return to the BBS.
It does exactly what you would think it would do!
1 - HELP for FASTMAIL.
You've obviously selected this option as you're looking at the
HELP file now!
2 - Change mail selections/last read pointer.
This option shows you WHICH areas you will automatically collect
mail from and allows you to make TEMPORARY changes to the areas.
The display shows a list of area numbers, the approximate number
of messages , and the NAME of the message area.
The S)elect option allows you to TEMPORARILY enable an area.
You can select individual areas or a RANGE of areas - e.g.
S 1 2 3 4 would select areas 1, 2, 3, and 4
S 5-10 would select areas 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10
*NOTE* there must be NO spaces before or the dash (-) when
specifying a range of areas. S 1-5 is valid, S 1- 5 is NOT.
The D)eselect allows you to exclude an area from THIS MAIL SCAN ONLY.
As with the Select command you can Deselect either individual
areas or a range of areas.
You can also Deselect ALL areas - use D ALL.
The R)eset last read allows you change the "last read" pointer for a
message area.
You can reset ONE area or a RANGE of areas - e.g.
R 11 120 would reset the "last read" pointer in area 11
to message 120.
R 2-8 35 would reset the "last read" pointers in areas 2,
3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 to message 35.
*NOTE* - The R)eset command expects TWO values - the first is the
area number (or range) and the second is the value to
set the "last read" pointer(s) to.
The L)ist command displays the areas again showing any changes made.
L can also be followed by a number - the listing will
START from this message area.
The Y)our areas command displays ONLY those areas that are CURRENTLY
selected.
It can be followed by a number - the listing will START from
this area.
The Q)uit returns to the MAIN menu.
*NOTE* THE SELECT/DESELECT options are ONLY effective for
the current use of the FASTMAIL door - when you exit the
door ALL areas you have joined (with the GT "A" command)
will be re-enabled.
JOINING AND UNJOINING MESSAGE AREAS.
To ADD a new message area to your list for automatic download
all you need to do is use the A)rea change command in GT - this
will mark you "active" in any area you select.
Conversely - to UNjoin (deactivate) a message area PERMANENTLY
from the automatic download use the UN)join command from GT.
3 - Change your default settings.
This option allows you to change YOUR personal FASTMAIL settings
which will be saved and used when you enter the FASTMAIL DOOR
You may set the following defaults -
a) Maximum messages per area.
You can set a limit on the number of messages extracted from
each area.
b) Extract Next or Last messages.
If there are MORE messages available for download in an area
than you can get in one session, you can specify whether you
extract from the START of the area (Next) or the END of the
area (Last) - using the Last option would give you the most
recent messages.
*NOTE* - the START of the area is the "last read" message
number - not the FIRST message!
c) File Transfer Protocol.
Valid protocols are Xmodem, Ymodem, Ymodem Batch, and
Zmodem.
Not all protocols may be available.
d) Compression method.
Valid compression modes are LZH, ARC, PAK, ARJ, and ZIP.
Not all modes may be available
e) Download messages entered by YOU.
You can instruct FASTMAIL NOT to collect any messages that you
have entered either on this system or another BBS.
(After all - you should know what you wrote!)
f) Automatically start extraction
If you set this option to Y, FASTMAIL will automatically
start a mail extract the FIRST time you log on for the day.
g) Auto download limit.
If the mailbag you generate is SMALLER than this value
FASTMAIL will AUTOMATICALLY start the file transfer.
If your mailbag is LARGER than (or equal to) the limit
FASTMAIL will ask you if you wish to continue. If you
reply NO to the question, NO last read pointers will
be altered and FASTMAIL will allow you to change your
options and/or selected areas and try again.
h) Download updated Bulletins.
If this option is set to Y, FASTMAIL will check for any
bulletin files that have been updated since you last
extracted mail and will include them in your mailbag.
i) Extract ALL PERSONAL mail.
This option enables you to get mail addressed TO/FROM you
even though the messages lie outside the range specified.
Take this example-
Assume that there are 200 UNREAD messages in an area, but
you only want to get the last 20. This would normally mean
that you wouldn't get any messages from the first 180
(because you have told FASTMAIL not to scan them).
However, if you set this option to 'Y', FASTMAIL WILL scan
those first 180 messages and extract ANY message specifically
addressed to or from you.
j) Set Verbose replies.
This allows you to specify how FASTMAIL will report on the
replies is it posting. There are three possible settings
N - Don't report verbosely.
P - Report verbosely and pause for a few seconds afterwards.
W - Report verbosely and wait for ENTER to be pressed.
Verbose reporting means that fastmail will display details of
replies as they are posted to conferences.
4 - Extract mail.
This will create a mailbag containing all messages available in
all areas, compress it using your default protocol, and, subject
to the Auto download limit, send the file to you using your
default protocol.
The resulting mailbag is in a format suitable for use with GTREAD
5 - Upload replies.
This will receive a FASTRPLY.??? compessed file created by GTREAD,
extract any messages in it and post them to the correct areas.
